Core of US President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policy is his use of a 1798 wartime authority allowing presidents to deport or imprison the natives and citizens of an enemy nation.
Although the Alien Enemies Act was passed to stop foreign espionage, the Trump government has used it as the legal justification for deportations of hundreds of claimed gang members.
The US deported 261 purportedly Venezuelan gang members to a well-known prison in El Salvador in March. Of those, the White House said, 137 were removed under the Act.
