Thursday, an airplane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood; hours later, the air still smelled strongly of jet fuel as detectives searched the area for hints to find out what caused the plane to crash, killing several people.
Authorities claimed the business jet initially struck a power wire then veered into homes in a San Diego military housing community about 4 a.m. Thursday. At least a quarter mile long over the residential street, the debris field saw jet fuel pour down, burning some vehicles and damaging others as far as several blocks distant from the main crash site.
Eliott Simpson, a senior aviation accident investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said before the aircraft crashed into the neighborhood it struck power lines roughly two miles from neighboring Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.
Simpson told reporters Thursday afternoon, “There are bits of the aircraft beneath the power lines.”
