Leader Kim Jong Un said that criminal incompetence caused the recent failed launch of a naval vessel, which North Korean authorities have arrested four officials over. State media reported.
North Korea seldom openly imposes harsh penalties to officials following failed military shows or weapon tests. The four officials’ weekend arrests demonstrate to Kim’s seriousness about his military build-up strategy and strengthening of discipline at home.
Wednesday’s damage to the 5,000-ton-class destroyer occurred under Kim’s presence when a transport cradle on the ship’s stern detached early during a launch event at the northeastern port of Chongjin. On the spot, satellite images revealed the vessel lying on its side covered in blue blankets and partially submerged sections.
The incident upset Kim as his naval forces modernization plan depends on the warship, the second known destroyer of the nation. Kim swiftly attributed what he described as a “criminal act caused by absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism” on military leaders, scientists, and shipyard operators.
Monday’s official Korean Central News Agency reported that law enforcement officials arrested Ri Hyong Son, vice director of the munitions industry section of the governing Workers Party’s Central Committee, claiming he was “greatly responsible” for the abortive launch.
