Rising Mount Everest for the 31st time, Nepali Sherpa Kami Rita, sometimes known as “Everest Man,” broke his own record for most climbs of the highest mountain in the world.
Tuesday, 23:15 GMT Monday, the 55-year-old accompanying a party of Indian army officials up the mountain arrived at its 8,849m top at 04:00 local time.
Kami Rita Sherpa requires no introduction. Expedition organizer Seven Summit Treks said in a statement, “He is not only a national climbing hero but a worldwide emblem of Everest itself.”
He scaled it twice some years, perhaps in 2023 and 2024.
Fellow Nepali Sherpa Pasang Dawa, who topped the summit 29 times – the most recent effort done last week – is his closest rival for the Everest record.
Media has already been informed by Kami Rita on how his climbs are only business.
“I am glad for the record, but records are eventually broken,” he remarked to AFP in May last year. “I am more pleased that my climbs enable Nepal to be known worldwide.”
Kami Rita posted glimpses of life on Everest earlier this month, including one of the Puja ceremonies, a Tibetan Buddhist custom carried out before to Everest trips to pray for a safe and successful climb.
One week after British mountaineer Kenton Cool ascended Everest for the 19th time, also surpassing his own record for the most climbs for a non-sherpa.
Over 500 individuals and their guides have safely ascended Everest this climbing season, which is drawing to a finish.
According to its tourism agency, Nepal issued more than 1,000 climbing licenses this season, including for Everest and other mountains.
