Liverpool’s, England — Authorities said Tuesday that the man apprehended when a vehicle passed through a gathering of soccer supporters in Liverpool’s city center, wounding scores, was suspected of attempted murder, hazardous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
Officials further mentioned that following the Monday incident, more than fifty persons were first treated at hospitals.
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill formally confirmed the suspect’s arrest during a news conference in Liverpool, northwest England, following Monday’s detention at the site.
“He remains in custody, where he is being interviewed,” she said.
Liverpool residents had to deal with the aftermath of the incident, in which a car could be seen in video uploaded on social media passing through a throng of celebrants commemorating Liverpool Football Club’s English Premier League title triumph.
At the news conference Tuesday, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said police thought the arrested guy had been able to follow an ambulance responding to claims a member of the public had a heart attack when a barricade was momentarily withdrawn.
Later on, the car could be seen accelerating and passing through a throng, toppling several pedestrians, then plowing forward once again. Many were left laying on the road.
The footage showed enraged Liverpool supporters swarming the car as it stopped, banging on its windows and exterior as police hurried to lock down the area.
Liverpool FC manager Arne Slot praised first responders, onlookers, and supporters in a Tuesday statement.
“Along with the supporters and onlookers who helped one another in an hour of need, I believe everyone engaged in the aftermath deserves the thanks of all of us,” he said.
