Washington District [US], May 28, 2025: Claiming that he had given Canada an option between remaining an independent nation or the 51st state of the United States, US President Donald Trump said that Canada may join the US “Golden Dome System” at no cost, so remaining apart would come for USD 61 billion.
Trump further said that Canada is now weighing the offer.
Trump posted on Truth Social, a social media platform, “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fantastic Golden Dome System, that it will cost 61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are thinking about the offer!
Al Jazeera claims that Trump revealed on May 20 that he has chosen a USD 175 billion design for the multilayered Golden Dome missile defense program meant to counteract aerial attacks “even if they are launched from space.”
Assistant to the Secretary of protection for Public Affairs and Senior Advisor Sean Parnell on May 20 had said, “Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth joined President Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office to announce the Golden Dome missile protection shield. This audacious project satisfies our obligation to defend the homeland and marks a historic commitment in American security.”
According to the US Department of security, the Golden Dome will resemble Israel’s Iron Dome security system meant to guard against inbound missile strikes.
The president said that an architecture has been chosen for the system, which will make use of space-based sensors and interceptors among land, sea, and space, thereby leveraging next-generation technologies. Trump said the Golden Dome should be finished in three to four years. Trump also claimed the Golden Dome should be finished in three to four years.
The development centers on a conversation on May 6 between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney whereby Trump commended Carney’s political performance.
He had remarked, “having Prime Minister Mark Carney with us is a huge privilege. He won a somewhat significant election in Canada a few days back. And I believe Canada selected a truly gifted individual.
According Al Jazeera, Trump persisted in pushing for Canada’s inclusion into her southern neighbour at the conference. Carney, however, underlined his dedication to upholding Canadian sovereignty and remarked, “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale.”
