Aiming to deploy the first unit in June, CEO Elon Musk stated on Thursday within talk of an upcoming robotaxi debut. Tesla has been testing driverless Model Y cars in Austin, Texas.
Earlier this year, Musk claimed, such a launch would begin with ten or twenty Model Y cars.
On Thursday in his X post, he said, “A month ahead of schedule,” noting that the tests had not seen any “incidents.”
Previously, he stated, Tesla wanted to start robotaxis’ tests by the end of June alone.
Although the billionaire, who had just hours before declared he was leaving U.S. President Donald Trump’s government, Bloomberg News had claimed that Tesla intends to introduce its robotaxi service in Austin on June 12 without offering a start date.
When asked for comment outside of usual business hours by Reuters, Tesla did not react right away.
On Wednesday, Musk said he was departing U.S. President Donald Trump’s government where he oversaw a turbulent efficiency push that disrupted multiple federal departments and finally failed to provide the generational savings he had aimed for.
With increasing competition and Musk facing backlash for his right-wing political views and work for Trump, Tesla sales have dropped globally.
