While other startups struggle to catch up as the price battle escalates, Chinese electric carmakers Leapmotor and Aito revealed record high deliveries in May.
Stellasant-supported Reflecting year-on-year increase of 148%, Leapmotor delivered a record 45,067 automobiles in May. Retailed from 122,800 yuan ($17,045), the carmaker debuted an upgraded version of its mid-sized SUV, C10 model, on May 15 Leapmotor claimed that in May 13,000 C10 units were delivered.
And on Sunday, Seres-backed Aito declared on social media that it had broken a new record with 44,454 automobiles supplied. With a starting price of 708,000 yuan, the automaker—which employs Huawei technology—on May 30 formally unveiled the Maxtro S800, an ultra-luxury sedan.
With 376,930 vehicles sold in May, industry powerhouse BYD stayed firmly in place. Based on CNBC’s analysis of publicly accessible data, total car sales in May climbed by 14.1% year on year.
The manufacturer on May 23 cut prices on 22 models, lowering the price of its Seagull hatchback by 20% to 55,800 yuan, which caused the shares of Chinese manufacturers to fall.
Recent scrutiny of the EV powerhouse over allegations it had harassed Jinan Qiansheng, one of BYD’s dealers in Shandong, over cash flow BYD responded to accusations in a statement for Chinese media.
Fears of a potential “Evergrande,” China’s former real estate behemoth that defaulted on its debt in 2021, have also been aroused by the deepening price war.
XpengMay deliveries fell from 35,045 automobiles the month before to 33, 525 units. The company maintained its run of delivering over 30,000 automobiles for the seventh straight month while also reporting a year-on- year increase of 230%.
Other firms, meanwhile, saw only slight increase in delivery.
Based on CNBC computations of publicly accessible data, Li Autodelivered 40,856 automobiles in May, marking a year-over-year increase of 16.7%; Geely-owned Zeekr shipped 18,908 vehicles, suggesting a 1.6% year-on-year growth. That is notwithstanding Zeekr’s efforts to set itself apart from the rivals by announcing free driver-assistance technologies in March.
Reflecting 13.1% year-on-year increase, Nio’s May deliveries dropped from the previous month and totaled 23,231 units. Made up 6,281 of total deliveries, Onvo is Nio’s family-oriented smart electric car brand. That qualifies as May Onvo’s best performing month thus far this year.
