San Juan, Puerto Rico— Monday activists welcomed a ruling by Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court allowing nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals to change their birth certificates.
The decision follows the case six nonbinary people launched against Puerto Rico’s governor, health secretary, and other officials.
The decision lets nonbinary and gender-nonconforming persons choose “X” as their gender marker on birth certificates.
President of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQ+ Federation Pedro Julio Serrano said Friday’s decision was historic and upholds equality.
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón informed reporters she was seeking advice on the decision from the Justice Department of Puerto Rico.
The decision comes more than seven years after a U.S. federal court mandated Puerto Rico’s government to let transgender persons change their gender on birth certificates should they so want after a lawsuit.
