ANkARA, Turkey — Tuesday, Turkey’s disaster management service reported, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Marmaris, a Mediterranean seaside town. Trying escape homes in panic, at least seven persons suffered injuries.
Said the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, the earthquake struck at 02:17 a.m. and originated in the Mediterranean Sea. It was felt in nearby areas, including the Greek island of Rhodes, where many people woke from their sleep, according to NTV television from Turkey.
Idris Akbiyik, Marmaris’ governor, informed the channel that although there was no initial indication of any major damage, seven persons were being treated for injuries following a panic jump from windows or balconies.
Turkey sits atop significant seismic lines, thus earthquakes are somewhat often.
More than 53,000 people in Turkey and hundreds of thousands of houses in 11 southern and southeast regions were either killed or damaged by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck 2023. In the northern portions of surrounding Syria, another 6,000 people perished.
